Kenora, Ont., mayor calls for regional help as municipal policing costs skyrocket

Kenora, Ontario’s mas grande says the province needs to dream up a new way to bill individuals that are patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police.

Dan Reynard said Kenora’s policing bill keeps getting larger and  has grown by $750, 000 over the past two years.

The city has a receive with the OPP, plus it types more when the numbers of refers to go up.

Reynard said  that is to the point where the city will have to break other services, just to cover the cost of police.

“We need to have all the province sit down with us, synopsis this, and we need to ask a better mechanism on how wish billed for the services, type he said.

Have calls costly

Trickster said Kenora serves as a huge hub for the region, indicating some calls attended to near OPP are for people who aren’t living in Kenora.

Inspector Bert McDonald may just be the manager of the Municipal Policing Bureau of the OPP. McDonald said that under the OPP accounts receivable model,   municipalities afford a standard per-property charge.

Reynard  said resolving the position will require political will.

“So this is we’re going to really need that province to sit down with us, ” he said. “We need the province to help company on this issue. ”
